The Best Time

Karen Lamb said a year from now you will wish you had started today. Jim Rohn said if you really want to do something, you'll find a way, if you don't, you'll find an excuse.

We all have ideas we don’t act on. We may be waiting for the best time, more money, or permission. Hindsight and AI probably won't help. Waiting for the absolutely perfect time will never arrive.

We may be out of excuses and left with one option.

The best time is probably right now.

Someday

I have literally lost count how many times I've heard a phrase that begins with the words; "Some day I'm going to..." Do we mean it or are we stalling? If you want to write some day, start writing today. If you want a new job, start looking today. If you want to leave that relationship, leave it today.

Easier said that done? That's one excuse. But if you look back at your life, how often when you've taken that action have you've said you should have done it earlier? Are we afraid to make the changes, moves, shifts, in our lives or are we more happy to complain about not making them?

Change is hard; doing nothing is harder

In the last two years, I have sold a house, moved twice, shifted my consulting business to a full-time roll at an agency, reconnected with some great friends, and I often think it was easier than I feared it would be while I stayed stuck for far too many years. You know what you want. It may take time, more money, some additional training,

I don't write that from some perfect perch above fear, I have lost count the things I've "meant to" or "wanted to" do; we all have that list. The key question is whether we're going to take those items off the list or actually do them. Because we could keep nestled in the safety of "some day I'm going to..." or take the shot.

It's irrelevant without one critical ingredient – action

Try this. Put your entire focus on that one single thing. Now make only one decision; whether you are prepared to do what it takes to accomplish it, or accept you don't really have the desire.

The late Jim Rohn had a great phrase I remind myself often - especially in those moments when I'm lying to myself about some day I'm going to - and that is; if you want something bad enough, you'll find a way; if not, you'll find an excuse.

Let's find a way.

Aim Less Shoot More

Over the past few months, I’ve been reflecting on the conscious and subconscious mind with regards to reaching goals. Your subconscious doesn’t give a rat’s tail what you say you want to do, it only cares what you actually do.

I have written hundreds of pieces on leadership, culture, teamwork, collaboration, communication, and strategy. It's easy to write about goals; it's kind of important to actually accomplish them!

So here are ten of them to keep me honest. Perhaps it’ll inspire you to write your ten. Then let’s get to work and stop talking about talking about it. As the late Jim Rohn said; If you want something, you’ll find a way; if you don’t, you’ll find an excuse.

• Spend more time outside
• Eat more veggies and less carbs – daily
• Write and publish my first book
• Listen more talk less
• Stop stopping myself from executing ideas
• Read more
• Do more charity work
• Finish creation of interactive leadership program
• Travel to Europe
• Spend less time on my laptop and my phone

Let’s go!

A Living or A Life?

We can pretend that work is one part of our lives and life is the other but we live a blended existence. It’s the second question most people ask when we meet them – what do you do for a living? A living? Is that where we’ve come? We get paid to provide a service and we call that a living. I’m not sure if that’s sad or a reflection of how far we have gotten off track.

Perhaps the perfect scenario is you work at something you truly enjoy; watch the Alan Watts video I posted recently and it might give you insight into what will do it for you.

Last week I had lunch with a colleague I hadn't seen in years and he reflected on the time he sold his brand new car because he realized he bought it to get to work to pay for it to get to work to pay for it. He stressed about the payments and it affected his work and then his life. He replaced the car with a bicycle.

Show me the Money

I have another friend who says he’s stuck in a bad relationship because he doesn’t want to lose his life’s savings. How sad is that. I wonder where that will be on his list of life’s passions and enjoyment as he takes his final breaths.

I’m often asked by clients and prospects how I can help them. The bigger question is understanding why they do what they do and what they want to accomplish. If there were easy answers and instant results, we’d all be millionaires.

Transformation Imminent

If we’re running a company that isn’t doing as well as it should, if we’re in relationships that aren’t making us happy, if we’re in a job that is restraining us from our true gifts, or if we’re simply unhappy where were are, what should we do? Or better stated, what are we prepared to do to change it?

The late Jim Rohn once said; “Your life doesn’t get better by chance, it gets better by change”. And the change needs to start with ourselves. I’m as guilty as you in the making excuses department.

Let’s start making a living not a paycheck.

Do They Know What You Want?

One customer, well taken care of, could be more valuable than $10,000 worth of advertising. Jim Rohn

If you sell a product or service, you need customers. And we all need customers. But we are customers as well.

Traditional wisdom states that you need to satisfy the needs of the most potential customers in order to be successful which means giving great customer service. And what does it mean?

Quality in a service or product is not what you put into it.
It is what the client or customer gets out of it.
Peter Drucker

If you need a new lawn mower, you probably go online and search. As you may know, the bright companies pay to be at the top of the search so the best lawn mowers for the best deal to solve you problem may not necessarily show up on page one. But you may not know nor care about search engine optimization; you just need a new lawn mower.

In business you get what you want by giving other people what they want. Alice MacDougall

The moment you walk through the door, you are assaulted by a fake smiley woman who can’t shove that week’s flyer into your mitt fast enough. Your space is invaded with the deal you can’t pass up.

As you quickly look to find a recycle bin you are on your way to the lawn care section. Tools, Paint, Automotive, there it is – Lawn Mowers. Oh dear, there are about 100 to choose from. Before you can have a scan of the bounty, another happy store employee pounces on you with options and choice. There is also the reminder that if you buy today, you get 21% off the 3-year warranty plan and a complimentary bag of grass seed.

The way to gain a good reputation, is to endeavor to be what you desire to appear. Socrates

With a polite “I’m just looking, thanks”, Mr. Happy disappears. After pursuing the choices, you hone in on three models. All close in price, but you are unsure of the differences in options. So you search for another joyful member of staff to help with your questions.

He works in the garden center, she will call a manager, he isn’t sure if that one is in stock, she reminds you of the deal on the 3-year warranty, he asks if you would take a floor model at a discount.

People expect good service but few are willing to give it. Robert Gately

You walk out without a lawn mower or any questions answered. But you are now well versed in grass seed and warranties. If you want more customers, pay attention to their pain and their needs. The customer may not always know what they need, but your additional services may not be a good starting point.

Do you think if the management and employees of this store gave each other superior customer service, they would be in a better position to give it to you?
