I have literally lost count how many times I've heard a phrase that begins with the words; "Some day I'm going to..." Do we mean it or are we stalling? If you want to write some day, start writing today. If you want a new job, start looking today. If you want to leave that relationship, leave it today.
Easier said that done? That's one excuse. But if you look back at your life, how often when you've taken that action have you've said you should have done it earlier? Are we afraid to make the changes, moves, shifts, in our lives or are we more happy to complain about not making them?
Change is hard; doing nothing is harder
In the last two years, I have sold a house, moved twice, shifted my consulting business to a full-time roll at an agency, reconnected with some great friends, and I often think it was easier than I feared it would be while I stayed stuck for far too many years. You know what you want. It may take time, more money, some additional training,
I don't write that from some perfect perch above fear, I have lost count the things I've "meant to" or "wanted to" do; we all have that list. The key question is whether we're going to take those items off the list or actually do them. Because we could keep nestled in the safety of "some day I'm going to..." or take the shot.
It's irrelevant without one critical ingredient – action
Try this. Put your entire focus on that one single thing. Now make only one decision; whether you are prepared to do what it takes to accomplish it, or accept you don't really have the desire.
The late Jim Rohn had a great phrase I remind myself often - especially in those moments when I'm lying to myself about some day I'm going to - and that is; if you want something bad enough, you'll find a way; if not, you'll find an excuse.
Let's find a way.

What?
What do we do?
What's holding us back?
What do we want to do?
What will we give up?
What are we willing to do?
What do we fear?
What won't we do?
What will we sacrifice?
What if we went for it?
What if we couldn't fail?
What if we started right now?
What if we stop wondering what if?

Speaking at TEDx
I spend a lot of time talking and writing about leadership and culture, teamwork and collaboration, and I spend very little time doing either about me. A friend has often said I need to put more skin in the game and I’ve begun doing that more lately. It’s an interesting remark since I say it to others all the time.
The last few weeks have been a lot of setting up for the New Year, some client work, some prospecting for new clients, working on my new book, and confirming some speaking engagements.
This one blows me away!
If you visit this site often, you know I post TEDtalks often; I’ve been a fan for probably 15 years. The events are first class, the website is crammed with fascinating talks and information. There is a daily discovery.
It is an absolute honor that I’ve been selected to be a speaker at TEDxGuelphU associated with the University of Guelph in Ontario Canada. The event is January 23. The theme of the day is “Theory to Reality”. I have a bit of a biographical journey to share that I was reminded of lately which is about taking chances even when we can’t see the whole road.
I’ll have more details when I get them.

Help Someone Up
I often say we see what we’re looking for but how often do we get what we don’t want? The human brain seems to do a great job of building up the negative energy in an instant yet it gets stuck on its way to positive thought. We get scared, we worry, and we play out scenarios that could take us in the wrong direction, which are destructive behaviors that get us nowhwere.
Earlier this week, I was reading a few articles on being bold. They sounded great – regret is worse than failure, freedom is better than money, I was getting excited and re-energized. But then that monkey brain takes over and the cycle continues.
Replacing Negative Thought with Positive Action
It’s clearly not enough to do what we tell each other to do and go for our passions, reach for our dreams, and dig deeper to find what we really want. Just saying it is just a bunch of words. If we don't take one more step today, we might wake up tomorrow beating ourselves up again.
We are battling generations of behavior inside each of us that contribute to our behavior maps that direct us to the wrong destinations. And we are doing it without a plan. We are hoping and wishing for a different result yet staying where we are.
Change is hard. Regret is worse.
I’ve been revisiting a great piece of advice recently. If we’re feeling down, help someone up. And it works. It feels great to take our minds away from our real or imagined problems and lend a helping hand to another.
It shakes loose the rubble of our confused and clutter minds to clear our way to potential ideas. So just for today, let's put aside what we are worried about and help someone up.
It could be exactly what we need.

Leadership and the Lone Nut
We spend a lot of time here talking about the importance of leadership. No one wants a boss, however most appreciate fair and strong leaders. But what does it take to be that first follower to join the lone guy dancing on a hill to make things happen?
We are often afraid to take chances which creates atrophied ideas. There is great admiration for those whose stand out and lead the charge but we often do so from afar. We need to join the idea when it may not be ours. It takes guts to be the first one to speak up but teamwork is requisite.
The next time you have a big idea, don’t be afraid to share it and be equally brave to know it takes others for it to become a reality. When were are inclusive to others and trust them with our ideas, magic can happen.
If you haven’t this, watch as Derek Sivers explains how a movement can be created in less than three minutes.
