Grateful
It's often said when you're stuck or feel down, helping someone less fortunate can be the biggest gift for both of you. No matter your religion or cultural background, there are points in your life when you have felt beaten down and sad.
Those are the times to take out a piece of paper and a pen and write down all the things that are going well. You may not think it's a long list but if you let your mind go, be kind to you, and think deep, you will find it. And it might just change your life.
Here's my list for today.
I am grateful for my health and for my loving family.
I am grateful for wonderful friends who are family and for food in my belly.
I am grateful for the ability to help others and for collaboration.
I am grateful for a vast network of people to explore new and exciting ideas.
I am grateful for chocolate. and or all of my senses and physical abilities.
I am grateful for music and for the ability to live in a cool town.
I am grateful for a charmed life and for creativity.
I am grateful for the desire and chance to do something bigger than me.
I am grateful for a great home and for freedom.
I am grateful for my passion for cooking and for learning my lesson.
I am grateful for a remarkable group of colleagues around the world.
I am grateful for curiosity. I am grateful for sharing and for coffee.
I am grateful for being able to give back and for perspective.
I am grateful for possibilities and for the ability to share this with you.
I am grateful for the blessing of a clever mind and for compassion.
Now it's your turn.

Leading in the Nowist
We human types are the only beings on earth who worry about the future and think about the past. A dog will learn over time that certain things should be avoided. Being a prey animal, a horse is on the lookout for danger.
A horse or a dog doesn't worry about how they ran three weeks ago or how their day will go next week. But we spend our perfectly good now splintering it into recanting missteps from yesterday while stressing about tomorrow.
Joi Ito reminds us to lead and innovate in the now.

Are People Important to You?
We marvel at those who appear fearless in their pursuits. We look for inspiration from individuals who seem to know exactly what they want to do. We may think they've done it all on their own but if you believe in Malcolm Gladwell’s Outliers theory (which I do), none of us is self-made. Conversely, none of us need to do it on our own. In fact, we need each other to help us get there.
No Experience Necessary
To make the dangerous assumption you don't require experience and perspective from others can only hurt you. To create a matrix that you have it all figured out, your way is always best, or worse, you need to figure it all out, can hold you back. It often personifies in arrogance which makes the climb even more difficult and lonely.
Look at the people in your life offering to help and thank them. Extend your hand to help others. Collaboration is not a hashtag or a word to put on a t-shirt. The realistic optimist in me thinks you want a better work culture while the recovering cynic hopes you mean it. It takes a village to raise a child and a network to grow a career.
Four words we shouldn't forget – can you help me.

It's More Than a Theory
The Big Bang was the event which led to the formation of the universe. Based on the best available measurements as of 2010, the original state of the universe existed around 13.7 billion years ago, which is often referred to as the time when the Big Bang occurred. The theory is the most comprehensive and accurate explanation supported by scientific evidence and observations. WikipediaYour Universe
Now take all that big brain stuff and apply it to your life, your career or your business. I’m often asked whether I can help prospects get from where they are, to where they want to be which points to our collective impatience. They want a guarantee, today.
We put these numbers and gauges on ourselves as if they are some sort of finishing line. Now some would say I should simply say yes and grab the money. After all, most clients want a quick win now over a long win later. Logic would deny that statement, action proves it.
Who’s Buyin’? Who’s Sellin’?
Let your mind drift back to all the jobs you’ve had, people you’ve worked with, people you’ve dated, people you went to school with and imagine they are all in one large venue. Now do the same with only the people you interact with now. It may be smaller but perhaps stronger; it may be wider in some areas and deeper in others. If we fast forward a few years, it may look much different than today.
But unlike the big freeze, the big bang, the big rip or the big crunch, you only have to worry about your network which continues to expand and contract. We are not collecting numbers like dusty trinkets on the mantle, these are people who touch our lives if even for a moment when they click “follow” or “friend”.
How will you embrace and nurture your universe?

Both Sides of Customer Service
Completing the Circle
It may be safe to say that I am among the vast majority of people who don’t like to go to the doctor or dentist. We scaredy cats would rather do just about anything to avoid it. Perhaps it's fear of pain or worry they will find something wrong.
After a couple of years, I went to the dentist this week. All the fretting and avoidance was for not. From the moment I walked through threshold of the office, I was greeted with a friendly face, sat in a nice waiting room, spent an hour with my hygienist who rocked and the dentist herself was kind and friendly. Despite wanting to have been just about anywhere else, the experience was enjoyable.
Managing Expectations
Our hope is to get good service when we buy something from a store or online portal. Sadly, the bar is low. So if it’s reasonably enjoyable or maybe even somewhat hassle free, we’re good. That is simply not acceptable. Yet we are customers and providers giving and taking, selling and buying all day long. Customer service is not a one-way experience. If you're not prepared to give great customer service, don't be surprised if your revenue line decreases.
Now you could argue that the guy behind the sandwich counter at lunch doesn’t need to be friendly when you have 20 minutes to keep the wolf from the door, but these things build up. We can’t turn on our good customer service for the things we deem important and do the minimum for the rest.
Beyond Skills
The dentist’s office doesn’t just clean and fix my teeth. The friendly competent nice people provide a safe place where a fully grown man can be a big baby for no concrete reason. And in this particular case, they seem to enjoy what they do. And that's the second part of providing great customer service.
The cliché that we're all in sales is not the whole story. Don’t sell me; show me why I should engage with you. And I won’t sell you; I will show you how I can enhance what you need. And floss daily!
What are your thoughts?

Is Your Company Socialized?
The Ever-Growing To-Do ListWe could probably theorize for the next five years about what channels work best, who knows more, what blog templates are most effective, how to maximize your search results and a long list of things we are all supposed to care about these days.
Last week, the internet connection went down in my office for three hours. I called my provider and in fact there was a problem in the area of my office. It got me thinking how reliant we are on technology. How reliant are we on each other?
Technology meets Human Collaboration
Next week, I have the privilege of writing a guest post for Mark Schaefer. His Grow Community is growing in leaps and I am honoured he asked me to help out. I decided to write about a passion of mine and that is building social business. I will make note of the guest post here as well.
This is a collective out of Copenhagen called Leader Lab which is doing fascinating work in the area of social business.

SXSW: 24 Years and Going Strong
Every March, thousands gather in Austin, Texas for the annual South by Southwest Music + Film + Interactive Festival (SXSW). It started in 1987 as a music event featuring hundreds of bands along Sixth Street playing showcases and it has grown into a world renowned event. It draws music fans along with media professional and major consumer brands to the lone star state’s capital for ten days of shows, panels, speakers and new product demonstrations. This year, there are over 2,000 artists playing more than 90 venues, thousands of media pros and the who's who of the digital world. The entire event begins tomorrow and runs until March 20th. Work has kept me away again this year but I vow to make it to the 25th anniversary. If you are there or are going, have a blast, If it's your first visit, planning your time will be critical.

Your Expanding and Contracting Universe
From Wikipedia: The Big Bang was the event which led to the formation of the universe. Based on the best available measurements as of 2010, the original state of the universe existed around 13.7 billion years ago, which is often referred to as the time when the Big Bang occurred. The theory is the most comprehensive and accurate explanation supported by scientific evidence and observations. Followers, blogs, influence, friends, podcasts, connections, the list goes on and on and grows with every passing opinion. Our individual universe may be expanding and contracting and heating up and cooling down. Yet we often look at right now as the way it will always be while we worry about yesterday and tomorrow. Some say it’s about the numbers, others claim it’s not about the numbers. You need to use this device, that platform, this interaction, that design. We seek answers outside to confirm or deny our theories and beliefs.
Your Universe

Facebook Changes Colors
Human Mediums. The social networking chatter has become deafening. To some, too much of the focus has been about campaigns and add-ons, quick fixes and magic tricks.
Human networking can be exquisite.
And with that in mind, we come to the mysterious Facebook color status updates.
You may have seen them, mostly from your friends who are women.
Instead of the usual personable content added to someone’s name, there is simply a color. Red, black, white, pink, orange, green, yellow, etc.
What does it all mean?
Some suggest it is tied to breast cancer awareness. If it is, then run with it. It is a devastating disease that affects all of us. The colors are a reference to the bra they are currently wearing.
If this is all simply a worldwide event for the purpose of networking and fun, then pick a color any color and go for it.
What says you?
